From the calendar back:
Each autumn when I assemble my calendar I realize it is a kind of scrapbook of the places I spent time in over the prior year, and the views I collected along the way. Many of the places were real, while others were made up. But I manage to recall tangible features of even the imaginary spots given how deeply I steeped in them, asking the terrain as it emerged on the canvas, “what are your best features?”, and “why should we care?”. I feel like I’m coming home from a trip when the last stroke of the brush is made, stepping back into the studio from a place that demanded my full attention for a spell.
I included in this calendar some of the sketches, notes, and palettes that accompanied me on the long march towards each painting’s completion, breadcrumbs that hint at the journey of creative process. Paintings are framed in arched vignettes to draw the viewer into the completed scene.
I invite you to join me in these places over the coming year with the humble hope that they remind you to relish in the landscapes that illustrate your 2023. I hope you seek out some breathtaking views. And when you find one, I hope that you find a rock flat enough to sit comfortably on for a few minutes while you listen carefully to how the bird’s call bounces off the tree trunks, you sniff around for the faint scent produced by the local botanics, you notice how the angle of the sun and the quality of the air affect the light smattering the ground around your feet. By this time next year you’ll be a different person, shaped by the places you’ve been and the wisdom and wonder they offered.
Enjoy the view from out there, wherever “there” is.
