I worked on this painting over the course of almost a year and a half. Unlike most of my work - which I plan in detail before I begin painting - I had no plan for this one. I just let it flow freely from my hand, letting only the prior brush stroke inform the next. I completed the piece just after coming back from maternity leave, a time when I felt a renewed sense of creativity from the perspective gained during such a big life change. The painting took on new life, it seemed somehow fresher, and more herbaceous as I brimmed with a new sense of wonder at the easel.
