The viewer stands in a pool of shade, observing a vibrant landscape in “In the Gum Tree Shade”. Gum Tree is the common name for smooth-barked trees and shrubs in several genera, the Eucalyptus being the most common. I used this piece as an exploration of the value of high contrast in highlighting particular tones in a painting’s palette, also thinking about the colors one might see in lusher parts of Australia where it is not uncommon to hear the term “gum tree”. Thanks to Australian native Juni Margrie for suggesting the title.
