My Mother’s Maple

I painted most of this piece en plein air (aka on-location) in my mother’s garden in Paradise, California in April 2021. The garden was planted around 1983 and grew up alongside my twin sister and I, an eclectic gathering of botanical siblings. My parents just recently moved out of the house they built there before my sister and I were born and sold the property, a forced goodbye after the Camp Fire burned most of the town down in 2018. Spending the time in her garden to paint this was my way of saying goodbye to this place after so long. I doubt I will ever return. The arched elements in the composition are a symbol of my family’s presence on this property, one that will remain most evident in the blooms the garden produces year after year for future inhabitants.
