Outpost features a backcountry tent outpost, watched over by Torrey’s peak in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The original painting was commissioned by Smartwool in 2020 to be used in an apparel line in fall 2021. We The team at Smartwool and I put our heads together to come up with the concept. We settled on featuring oft-visited Colorado wilderness areas (the other commissioned painting for this project was Gossamer which depicts the Ruby Mountain area outside Crested Butte), and working in some structure that resembled tents and other temporary infrastructures that humans create in order to more deeply submerge themselves in nature. I employed a somewhat retro-feeling palette, so alongside the tent structure I pulled in some architectural elements reminiscent of midcentury styles you can find in the Denver suburbs.
