The Modernists features a view of the famous Grey’s and Torrey’s peaks in the Colorado Rockies, which are some of the most hiked 14’ers in the state.

In contemporary times we visit barren, cold, beautiful places that we may not have been able to do access/experience in the past, but we do it with the pleasantries provided by modern technologies. In this context, the figurative structure containing the figures is symbolic of the gear, the planning, and the escape back into urbanity that accompany an expedition into this wilderness area. This relationship to the outdoors is just part of modern life, and part of what defines modernists these days for better or for worse. These pleasantries include gear, smartphones, motor vehicles, televisions, bottled oxygen.. the list goes on. Luckily, these technologies also enable more people to experience the great outdoors, which is I believe tantamount to fostering the reverence for nature needed to create a society who prioritizes its protection.
