Acrylic, charcoal, and gouache on canvas

California's Big Sur is one of my favorite places in the world. It is one of the first places I discovered the joys of escaping the city for camping and backpacking in my past, it is currently one of my favorite places to go for painting inspiration, and it is where I want to build a house someday. For me, Big Sur holds different meanings for my past, present, and future. It is a meditation on the way that certain places hold evolving power over us throughout our lives. The variation in symbolism of this place over time is depicted by the three moons moving vertically through the composition.

“Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow” is part of an exhibition at the Hancock Gallery on view from October 14, 2021 - January 15, 2022.
